چکیده

Radar remote sensing has a significant role in remote sensing technologies and develops rapidly. A series of new synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites has been launched to space having various operation modes which offer different resolutions and advantages. A very actual SAR satellite is German TerraSAR-X (TSX), launched on 15 June 2007. This satellite is a revolution for the SAR technologies at the resolution side and offers 1m ground resolution in Spotlight mode. To investigate the quality of digital surface models (DSM) which are derived from high resolution data of this satellite, a comparison has been made to a DSM based on optical space images taken by IKONOS. For the test DSMs have been generated with the SAR and the optical data covering parts of Istanbul, Turkey and are compared with a more accurate DEM of same area, based on aerial photogrammetry. This was leading to the result, that the high resolution Spotlight mode TSX model has nearly the same visual quality and absolute accuracy as the IKONOS model and has a slightly better relative accuracy.

Exploring Digital Surface Models from Nine Different Sensors for Forest Monitoring and Change Detection

Digital surface models (DSMs) derived from spaceborne and airborne sensors enable the monitoring of the vertical structures for forests in large areas. Nevertheless, due to the lack of an objective performance assessment for this task, it is difficult to select the most appropriate data source for DSM generation. In order to fill this gap, this paper performs change detection analysis including...

The Influence of DEM Quality on Mapping Accuracy of Coniferous- and Deciduous-Dominated Forest Using TerraSAR-X Images

Climate change is a factor that largely contributes to the increase of forest areas affected by natural damages. Therefore, the development of methodologies for forest monitoring and rapid assessment of affected areas is required. Space-borne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery with high resolution is now available for large-scale forest mapping and forest monitoring applications. However, a...

Accuracy evaluation of SRTM and ASTER DSMs

Over the last few years DSMs derived from satellite sensors, as SRTM (Space Shuttle Radar Topography Mission) and ASTER (Advance Space borne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer) DSMs, have been issued and continuously updated. The SRTM DSM is delivered in three different versions (Finished, DTED, CGIAR), with different nominal accuracy covering a large part of the world at a resolution o...

A Radargrammetric Model for Sar Stereo Pairs in Spothlight Mode

The availability of new high resolution radar spaceborne sensors offers new interesting potentialities for the acquisition of data useful for the generation of Digital Surface Models (DSMs). Two different methods may be used to generate DSMs from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data: the interferometric and the radargrammetric approach. It is well known that the two main steps for DSMs generatio...
